Joint account or separate? How UAE couples actually manage money

13 September 2026

The question that comes up in month three

You move to Dubai together. One salary lands on the 25th, the other on the 28th. Rent is an annual cheque. DEWA, Salik, the nursery invoice and the trip home all arrive from different directions.

Sooner or later someone asks: should we just put everything in one account?

Three ways couples do it

One joint account for everything. Simple, transparent, and the fastest route to friction. Every coffee is visible. For most couples this works for the household and fails for personal spending.

Fully separate accounts. No friction, no clarity. Nobody knows whether the household is ahead or behind until the annual rent cheque appears.

The hybrid — what most UAE couples land on. A shared pot funded by both salaries covers rent, utilities, groceries, school and the India transfer. Everything else stays personal.

Making the hybrid work

  1. Add up the fixed household cost for a year, including the rent cheque and school fees, then divide by twelve. That is the monthly shared number.
  2. Split it in a way that feels fair — equal halves, or in proportion to income if salaries differ a lot.
  3. Each person transfers their share on payday, and nothing else touches that pot.
  4. Review once a month, not once a crisis.

Where this gets hard for expats

Two currencies. The household number is in dirhams, but a chunk of it leaves as rupees — an EMI, parents support, an SIP. If you only track dirhams, the India side quietly grows. If you only track rupees, the rent cheque ambushes you.

Keep both visible. An AED account and an INR account, one dashboard, one monthly number.
